El REGGAE es un genero musical que se desarrollo en la isla caribeña de Jamaica, como una combinación entre ritmos Afro-antillanos y el Rhythm & Blues norteamericano.
Comenzó a mediados de la década del 50, por esos años las radioemisoras del sur de Estados Unidos, especialmente las de la ciudad de Nueva Orleáns, eran escuchadas en Jamaica y los ritmos musicales como el Rhythm & Blues, que de estas provenían se fueron mezclando con los ritmos originales de los habitantes de esta isla. Los elementos distintivos de esta música eran el énfasis del llamado off-beat, de marcada tendencia caribeña.
En Jamaica, el off-beat comenzó a acentuarse cada vez más, a la par que la influencia de los ritmos Afro-antillanos comenzaba a hacerse más notable, y de esta forma fue como se derivaron el SKA, el BLUEBEAT y el ROCKSTEADY, antecedentes musicales inmediatos al REGGAE. A fines de los años 60, una nueva generación de músicos, que intentaban nuevas formas de tocar ROCKSTEADY, con una visión atenta a los cantos Rastafaris, que enfatizaban una repetición rítmica y asumidamente ligada a un movimiento y a una presión social.
Nace así el movimiento REGGAE, que colocaba en primer plano al bajo y a la batería dejando los otros instrumentos como acompañamiento. Fue tambien influenciada por la música SOUL con sus dulces armonías, y el ROCK con sus sonidos eléctricos más crudos. Otro elemento importante en el desarrollo fue que las letras de las canciones comenzaron a reflejar situaciones sociales y una crítica a la sociedad moderna.
El REGGAE incluye canciones que tratan sobre pobreza, política y Rastafarianismo (culto religioso jamaiquino que da homenaje como Dios (Jah) al fallecido emperador de Etiopía, Haile Selassie I (antes de su coronamiento Ras Tafari Makonnen).
El REGGAE ha influenciado otros estilos músicales como el PUNK ROCK y fue originador del RAP, iniciado por jamaiquinos residentes en Nueva York. El RAP ha regresado la influencia al estilo moderno de REGGAE, el RAGGAMUFFIN.
Esta musica a sobrevivido al paso de los años y aunque Jamaica sigue siendo el origen principal de toda la música reggae que se produce, otros paises como Inglaterra (debido a su gran número de inmigrantes y descendientes jamaiquinos), países Africanos y Latinoamericanos, producen muy buenos artistas de REGGAE.
